Race Saason Ki – Then & Now

Ten years ago, a multi-starrer thriller hit the screens. Directed by the duo Abbas-Mustan, Race was a carnival of conspiracy and plot-twists.

Still from Race (2008)

The film explored themes of sibling rivalry, betrayal, greed, revenge and passion. Starring Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor and Sameera Reddy, Race gave Bollywood thrillers a whole new persona. Set in South Africa, the story revolved around two brothers who lived on the edge with a high-profile business in horse racing.

The makers also jumped on the “Atif Aslam” bandwagon with a romantic number, i.e. Pehli Nazar Mein. And who can forget the party songs Zara Zara Touch Me and the famous title track Race Saason Ki – Allah Duhai Hai.

The action-packed-suspense-thriller genre of Race and its music soon became a brand, turning it into a franchise.

Poster of Race 2 (2013)

Race 2 released in 2013 with the same directors, similar storyline of high-profiled protagonists with multi-faceted personalities, a slightly altered cast, and a bigger budget. There was no surprise that this installment would have more plot-twists with betrayals, raging cars, bomb squads, exotic locations, and even more item songs. Race 2 may not have been as popular as its prequel, but it certainly was good enough to deserve a part 3.

Earlier this week the world saw the trailer of the much-awaited Race 3, with only Anil Kapoor as a returning cast member; Saif Ali Khan has been replaced with Salman Khan. The film also stars Bobby Deol, Jacqueline Fernandez, Saqib Saleem, Daisy Shah, and Freddy Daruwala.

A decade later, the director of the series has changed, a multi-starrer is now known as an ensemble cast with higher-octane action sequences, slightly better computer graphics, fancy cars being blown up in fancier locations.

The trailer opens with Salman Khan standing on the terrace of a skyscraper, setting the premise for … well “zindagi ki race.”

Few things that caught our attention – the makers have upped the glamor quotient with actors in extremely chiseled bodies (don’t miss Bobby Deol), tightly choreographed songs (thanks for director-choreographer Remo D’Souza), covering more locations, and definitely more twists and turns.

Watch the trailer here:

Needless to say, the plot revolves around betrayal of family for power, and a whole lot of cheesy one-liners about “business.” It’s no doubt that the film will be a box-office success with its release on Eid and the superstar presence, but let’s hope it’s more than just some cheap thrills and car chases.

Vikas Khanna – The man who believes in taking the road less traveled, turns filmmaker with ‘The Last Color’

A Michelin star chef, a restaurateur, humanitarian, a cookbook as well as fiction writer, and now a filmmaker – Vikas Khanna is a man of many talents.

Khanna has written a fiction “The Last Color,” based on the age-old tradition of banning widows to play the festival of Holi in Vrindavan. The book will be published on 18th May 2018, but what’s even more amazing is that it’s been adapted to a film directed by the man himself starring Neena Gupta.

The National Award winning actress made the announcement of the project on her Instagram account, describing it as “one of the most fulfilling experiences as an actor, a movie where I didn’t have to slip into the role, the minute I put on my whites…. I became Noor.”

Vikas Khanna with the cast of The Last Color

The Last Color is about a friendship between a young tightrope walker and a widow named Noor in Vrindavan, who yearns to play the festival of colors, but is forbidden by tradition.

Calling the project his “most organic work,” Khanna discussed why he was compelled to share this story saying, “Imagine being denied the right to touch color. My life is all about color in the form of spices and vegetables; the thought that if someone took that privilege away from me, drove me crazy.”

The first look of the film was unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival 2018. Khanna shared the powerful teaser on his Instagram account as well.

#TrailerTalk – Deadpool 2 (Hindi)

Ranveer Singh announced the trailer launch of the Hindi version of Deadpool 2 today.

How is he a part of the franchise? Singh has voiced the superhero for the Indian audience and there are some mixed reviews and reactions.

The trailer, just like any other Marvel movie, is action-packed with tons of graphics and glimpses of their new project to save the world. Now, it’s no surprise that Deadpool is unlike any other superhero – he’s crass, physically flawed, and has a very twisted sense of humor.

Singh has certainly matched the superhero’s characteristics and personality along with his own trademark of high energy and wit. But something seems amiss as soon as the trailer begins. While the trailer includes some Hindi slangs and dialogues relevant to India to make it more relatable to the audience, it lacks the punch required to make an impact. It kinda falls flat midway through the trailer and we’re forced to view the lead as the real Ranveer Singh, and not the Deadpool character.

You can watch the complete trailer here and share your thoughts:

Trailer Rating: 3.5 Popcorns
Ranveer Singh has another feather in his cap and is making the most of all the new opportunities. His efforts deserves his own brand of superhero!

#TrailerTalk – Bucket List

Madhuri Dixit finally makes her debut in Marathi cinema. The trailer of her next film, Bucket List is out today. It opens with a woman (Dixit) asking, “Do you know what a bucket list is?” and is simply answered by her daughter who says “Bucket list is my identity. Without it, my life has not purpose” … and this sets the tone for the film (well trailer, for now).

Dixit plays a mother, Madhura Sane, who is a heart recipient and on the road to full recovery. This takes her to the home and life of her heart donor Sai, a young girl who couldn’t live long enough to check off items on her bucket list. Thus begins Madhura’s journey living vicariously through Sai’s list and experiencing a roller-coaster ride to self-discovery.

PS. There’s a sweet surprise at the end!

Dixit’s charm is endearing and seeing Renuka Shahane share screen-space after 23 years is so nostalgic.

#TrailerTalk – Veere Di Wedding

When was the last time you watched a Bollywood film on girlfriends. A film celebrating womanhood and friendship with the good, bad and all the ugly stuff in between.

Veere Di Wedding seems to have all the flavors and masala showing just that.

As the title goes, the film is about a veere’s wedding, i.e. Kalindi played by Kareena Kapoor Khan. The story revolves around four childhood friends who are troubled in their respective lives because of marriage. While Kalindi is getting married, Avni (Sonam Kapoor) seems to have no prospects. Sakshi (Swara Bhasker) on the other hand is on the verge of a divorce, and Meera (Shikha Talsania) has issues since she eloped to get married.

Not only is the trailer fun, its so exciting to see real, unadulterated and unfiltered conversations among a girl gang. Props to the dialogue writers and the makers for keeping it real.

Can’t wait to attend this big-fat-veere-wedding. The trailer has got us singing Teri Pappi Le Loon.

Armaan Malik – In a world full of cacophony, be a melody

It’s not surprising to hear a remix of an old Bollywood song these days. The promotions of almost every movie brings a new remix of a classic, and it’s become such a norm that we’re obligated to think, “Which song will they ruin now?”

Not just in films, some music companies are re-releasing old songs to bring back the trend of music videos. This trend, however, is not new!

90’s kids would remember watching remixes of even older Bollywood songs on music channels. Everything from “Kehdoon Tumhe” by DJ Aqeel to the super-controversial “Kaanta Laga – Baby Doll” version; that was quite a phase.

T-series, one of the largest music labels and movie studios in India, has been at the forefront of bringing music videos back in fashion. Recently, they released some videos re-launching their old creations, and one of them has definitely caught our attention – “Ghar Se Nikalte Hi”

The song has been re-composed and reprised by Amaal Mallik and sung by Armaan Malik. Unlike most remixes that are tagged as “item numbers” in films, this version is a refreshing change. There’s no rap, no hip-hop beats, and no auto-tune; just sweet music and a soulful voice worth listening to on loop. In case you haven’t heard it yet, here’s the video:

The original song was penned by lyricist Javed Akhtar, composed by Rajesh Roshan and sung by Udit Narayan. It featured in the film Papa Kehte Hain in 1996.

Ishaan Katter – Welcome to the movies

Actors are under tremendous pressure to maintain a certain image in public and grab the audience’s attention at every opportunity they get. Today, an actor’s success is measured by the number of followers on social media, red carpet appearances, and even their elite sense of fashion at airports and the gym.

But in the midst of all the glam and gloss, the art of acting has taken a backseat. Looking top-notch has somehow become more important than perfecting the craft and honing the right skills to create magic on camera.

Several actors step into Bollywood with dreams of becoming famous, but only a few manage to really steal the spotlight. Ishaan Katter is on his way to doing just that – and possibly for all the right reasons.

Katter started his journey quite early when he shared screen space Shahid Kapoor in Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi!

Still from Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi!

Now, its no news that Shahid Kapoor is Katter’s half-brother, which probably made the latter’s access to Bollywood much easier.

But that alone hasn’t necessarily given him a golden ticket to the industry.

Still from Beyond the Clouds

Katter appears to have closely observed his brother’s journey and is passionate about films, which earned him a launch with Iranian director Majid Majidi as a lead in Beyond the Clouds, which releases today.

He brings a certain innocence and vulnerability as a newbie in B-town, which is endearing and certainly a refreshing change.

We saw a lot of Khatter’s raw personality during the promotions of the film where he, on several occasions, expressed his love for cinema and his admiration for Majidi.

Talking about his experience as a debutant Katter said his primary take-away from working with the award-winning director was having faith, “[Majidi] said I know you want to be a good actor and a good artist, but don’t forget first and foremost we’re all human beings and what we do or say to each other counts the most… so strive towards being a good person and everything you want will come from that.”

The actor shows potential to be a great actor and has already won an award for best actor at the 5th International Bosphorous Film Festival for Beyond the Clouds.

He will soon make an official entry to mainstream Bollywood with Dhadak, directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Dharma Production along with Zee Studios. The much-awaiting film has been in the news for launching of two new faces, but we hope their craft remains the highlight in the grand scheme of things.

Taking a cue from his star brother whose been in the business for over a decade, Katter recently shared his wisdom on staying grounded, “If you want to be an extraordinary actor, you’ve got to be an ordinary person.”

We hope he lives by this mantra and proves his mettle. Can’t wait to see how his career progresses.
