#Shorts – ‘Natkhat’ carefully uses the powerful tool of storytelling to influence and inspire

Stories are powerful. They have the power to inspire. They have the power to influence. They have the power to make us think and they have the power to create change.

Natkhat is a story of a mother who uses the tool of storytelling to educate her young son about society, relationships, gender equality and respect.

Set in a developing village in India, the film opens on a large ground where several boys are seen playing cricket in small groups. Amongst them is a young boy Sonu (played by Sanika Patel), who overhears a bunch of teenage boys going over details of a plan they are perhaps planning to execute.

Though not said explicitly, it doesn’t take too long to decipher that the teenagers are planning a gang rape… casually in broad daylight.

Sonu curiously eavesdrops and makes mental notes about their discussion.

Still from 'Natkhat'

What follows is a series of subtle and not-so-subtle examples patriarchy, gender inequalities, casual/marital rape and oppression in society. Whether it’s at school when the teacher ignores the girl student who raises her hand to answer or at home when the grandfather’s argument to a little boy’s criminally sexist comment is “Ladka hai, ho jata hai.”

Vidya Balan plays the role of a concerned mother who realizes her impressionable son is not only learning but also emulating all the toxicity.

She decides to narrate a story that weaves in the harsh and disturbing issues in our communities; a story that is told not only for Sonu but for the viewer as well.

Co-written by Annukampa Harsh and director Shaan Vyas, Natkhat carefully and cleverly show parallels between a kid’s tale and reality where a man’s ignorance and arrogance knew no bounds. How patriarchy creates imbalance, taints mindsets and leaves societies damaged and rotten.

The film leaves you with a sigh of relief when Sonu symbolically sheds the old-fashioned veil of patriarchal tradition and welcomes equality.

Maybe there’s still hope for positive change. Maybe it’s a start. Maybe that is the power of stories.

Actress Vidya Balan’s ‘Natkhat’ is about relationships and gender equality

Actress Vidya Balan adds another feather in her cap for her next film.

The poster of Natkhat has been released where Balan is not only making her debut in a short film but also as a Producer in collaboration with RSVP Movies.

Speaking of exploring the role of a producer, she expressed,

It’s the beautiful and powerful story that called out to me in a way that made me want to act in it and also turn producer. And who better than RSVP to do it with!

Co-writter by Annukampa Harsh and Director Shaan Vyas, Natkhat is based on a mother who tries to educate her son about relationships, gender equality, importance of consent and respect for women.

In an interview, Balan elaborated on the synopsis saying,

The mother systematically tries to change a child’s perspective of the power equation, gender equality, respect and more, through stories. Conversations around the role of parenting, and what constitutes consent should be constantly evolving. We are both victims and perpetrators of patriarchy.

The tagline in the poster also highlights the premise of a pensive looking mother narrating a story to her young son – “Ek kahaani sunoge…?

Natkhat went on floors in July 2019. Made specially for internation film festivals, it will be premiered worldwide at the ‘We are Global’ Film Festival on June 2, 2020. You can watch it on their YouTube Channel.

‘Krrish 4’ may be in the works with the reprise of Jaadu

Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan developed Bollywood’s first superhero series in 2003 with Koi… Mil Gaya with a backstory to create a franchise. The installments got bigger in production starring actor Hrithik Roshan in titular roles in Krrish [2006] and Krrish 3 [2013] (note: There’s no Krrish 2 because Krrish 3 was released as a trilogy).

Scene from Krrish 4

Recently, the makers dropped the news of a possibility of the fourth installment – Krrish 4.

Reportedly, a team of writers along with the producers have been working on developing the story and reprising the role of the fan-favorite alien, Jaadu.

A source from Mumbai Mirror quoted,

Rakesh ji and Hrithik, with their team of writers have been brain-storming on how to take Krrish forward and have finally locked an idea. Jaadu has strong recall value and they felt that with Rohit Mehra dying in Krrish 3, it’d be the right time to introduce Krrish to the alien who gifted him his special powers.

Speaking to the publication, Hrithik also made a statement saying,

Yes, the world can do with some Jaadu now.

Krrish 3 ended with the birth of Krrish’s son whom the couple (played by Priyanka Chopra and Hrithik Roshan) names Rohit to honor the memory of Krrish’s father. The makers left the audience on a suspenseful note where the new-born suddenly disappears from the crib in a hospital room and then is supposedly found on the ceiling – signifying that he too is perhaps born with superpowers. This obviously paved way for the possibility for another installment in the franchise.

Krrish 4 has been underway since 2017. However, it has been delayed owing to Rakesh Roshan’s health. The film was earlier rumored to go on floors in early 2020 for a Christmas release, but the outbreak of Covid-19 paused the production indefinitely.

#Shorts – ‘Everything Is Fine’ is a story of every housewife and mother who breaks a little everyday

Everything Is Fine is a story of every housewife and mother on the verge of a breakdown. She is helpless and desperate for a companion who would support her or simply lend an ear without any judgements.

Side note: This is not really a film review, but my thoughts after watching this honest and heartfelt short film… twice.

I had the opportunity to watch Everything Is Fine at an event months before its official release. The film made such a strong impact that I had to speak to its maker, Mansi Nira Jain. I didn’t want to discuss the film in particular because it was quite self-explanatory and dissecting it would take the essence away. But I wanted to know more about her vision, her craft and her story (click here to watch our interview).

Scene from Everything Is Fine. Source: YouTube

When was the first time you witnessed your mom reach her tipping point and break down? When was the last time? What happened the next day?

Everything Is Fine is a day in the life of a mother and a tired housewife who breaks a little everyday, and then mends herself the next day.

She’s never on a break even when she’s on vacation. She’s responsible for packing all the essentials, making tea, cooking all meals, attending to relatives and taking care of everyone’s needs.

Actress Seema Pahwa, playing ‘Asha,’ effortlessly slips into the character of a mother keeping it together, even when she’s on the brink of falling apart.

After a long hectic day of traveling and listening to patronizing remarks, she goes up to the terrace at night to release the emotional baggage. Her daughter ‘Bitto,’ played by actress Palomi Ghosh, finds her crying and is obviously concerned.

Scene from Everything Is Fine. Source: YouTube

However, instead of consoling her, the otherwise supportive and independent daughter rebukes her mother’s plea to leave her father. Bittoo’s advise is perhaps how we are conditioned to deal with such distress – just sleep on it and everything will be fine tomorrow.

The film also subtly captures how men can be so conveniently condescending – they can’t stand their wives ‘nagging’ them for their smoking habit, their work is always more important than the lady’s, their sacrifices are greater …

Scene from Everything Is Fine. Source: YouTube

On the third day, Asha decides to go off on her own and explore the city; That’s her way of breaking all the rules for a moment and living for herself. She buys jootis (shoes), enjoying a rickshaw ride and smoking under the blue sky. She then invites her daughter to join her on a boat ride, not to gain sympathy or concern, but simply accompany her.

Maybe sometimes that’s all a mother needs – a companion to enjoy the ride once in a while, so everything feels fine.

#Review – There’s nothing new or haunting about ‘Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship’

Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship is a weak attempt for a horror flick. It uses all the old-fashioned cliche of a horror film, including an evil ghost that crawls on walls and screams gibberish.

Directed by Bhanu Pratap Singh, the film revolves around the character of Prithvi Prakashan [Vicky Kaushal], a shipping officer. We are introduced to him as he single-handedly rescues several women from being trafficked in a shipping container.

Right off the bat we see a depressed man who is struggling to cope with the death of his wife and daughter. The film travels back in time to reveal parts of Prithvi’s life when he married Sapna [Bhumi Pednekar], having a daughter and their accidental death by drowning.

In present day however, an old abandoned ship called ‘Sea-Bird’ mysteriously docks at a port in Mumbai leading to an investigation led by Prithvi.

He inspects every room and discovers a CD with footage of the crew from the early 2000’s. This serves as a primary clue in the investigation and he soon notices supernatural activities on the ‘Sea Bird.’

There are subtle similarities between the condition of the ship and Prithvi’s life – abandonment, distress, loss and perhaps even guilt. This could be why he is drawn towards it. However, there are several plot holes leaving many unanswered questions.

The film tries to build tension, but fails due to lack of substance in the story. After the interval, the suspense of the ghost and the last passengers is revealed extremely casually – there’s even a stereotypical “know-it-all” scientist/professor playing ‘hot & cold’ to trace the spirit with a tiny instrument.

Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship relies heavily on the eerie set of the ship (it’s primary prop) designed by Aditya Kanwar and sound design by Anish John. The gloomy color tones are also used cleverly by Colorist Ashirwad Hadkar, but it’s just not enough to afloat a sinking script.

Popcorn Rating[1 / 5]

There’s nothing new or haunting about this “horror film.”

The title suggests the possibility of a second installment. Let’s hope it succeeds in living up to the genre in the sequel.

Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship is streaming on Amazon Prime

Celebrating Rishi Kapoor – Remembering our lovely ‘Chintu Ji’ joyously

It all seems like a bad dream.

Yesterday, we said goodbye to another legend who defined an era of Bollywood – Rishi Kapoor lost his battle with cancer on 30 April, 2020.

A day after mourning the loss of actor Irrfan Khan, we had to absorb this heartbreaking news.

He is irreplaceable and the only way to honor his memories is by celebrating him. We want to remember our lovely ‘Chintu Ji’ joyously.
