Remembering Irrfan Khan – I want to take a moment to say goodbye.

The world woke up to a sad news on 29 April, 2020.

It lost one of its finest – Irrfan Khan – an actor, an artist, an inspiration.

As if the world wasn’t already a dark place right now, it got gloomier.

Though we never met, the loss of Irrfan Khan feels personal. Words fail to describe the heartbreaking & numbing feeling of losing someone who made such an impact.

His was a face I recognized way before he graced the big screens.

My first memory of Irrfan Khan is from the 90’s show on Zee TV Banegi Apni Baat – a show I never failed to watch after school. Today, I don’t remember what role he played, but I remember him!

Scene from Banegi Apni Baat

He appeared in several TV shows in that decade and even did some Bollywood films, but Maqbool [2003] made him an overnight star. It earned him the success an artist deserves.

In an adaptation of Macbeth by Shakespeare, Khan played the titular role as a right-hand man of a don, who had an affair with the latter’s mistress. A man torn between love, ambition, duty and guilt. This was probably the first time we witnessed an actor who could emote beautifully with his silence. No over-the-top theatrics, lengthy dialogues, ‘heroic’ fight scenes… just a piercing gaze.

Scene from Maqbool

He was a natural. He was authentic.

He went on to make great films and own every character he played. Whether it was a geeky man named Monty in Life in a Metro [2007], a family man in The Namesake [2007], an insecure and reserved barber in Billu [2009], a survivor in Life of Pi [2012], a lonely widower Saajan Fernandes in The Lunchbox [2013], a simple businessman Rana Chaudhary in Piku [2015], a happy-go-lucky and blunt Yogi in Qarib Qarib Singlle [2017], a bitter husband in Blackmail [2017] or a broken man Shaukat in Karwaan [2018]… he lived every character.

I haven’t watched his last film Angrezi Medium [2020] yet, but remember admiring his brilliance from a dialogue in the trailer where he promises to take his daughter abroad – “jayenge beta, jayenge.” With just three words, I knew him, I understood his character, I knew that person – a loving and protective father of a young daughter with dreams. That’s exactly how my father is – and that’s the power of a great actor who has the ability to bring a character alive with just three words.

Scene from Angrezi Medium

I can go on and on about his work, dedication and sincerity, how he redefined “heroism” in Hindi cinema, struggled to make a mark in theatre, TV and films, broke barriers, and received global recognition … but it’s not enough.

I wish we had crossed paths. I wish we could’ve shared stories about his adventures in the big world of entertainment. I wish we could just chat about things that move him. I wish…

Irrfan Sir, it feels odd remembering you in an article or a post. Hope this reaches you along with the million wishes from everyone you’ve moved with your art, your smile, your wit, your humor and your simplicity. Wish there was another way – I want to take this moment to say goodbye.

Thank you for the memories, thank you for the movies, thank you for the magic!

#Review – ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan’ has a bold subject, but sloppy execution

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan [2020] is the second installment to 2017 film Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, which was bound to have a bolder subject to create an impact. And it did, but not enough.

However, what could’ve been a clutter-breaking film, is unfortunately let down by a sloppy execution.

The trailer basically gave away the crux of the storyline – homosexuality and the deep-rooted homophobia within a conservative family. But the film failed to go beyond what we already saw in the promos.

The story is about a couple Kartik Singh [Ayushmann Khurrana] and Aman Tripathi [Jitendra Kumar] who traveling to the latter’s hometown for his cousin’s wedding. On their train ride along with the entire family on-board, they have a passionate moment and are caught by Aman’s father.

What follows is a series events where the family tries to “purify” Aman, attempts to explain homophobia, and cope with the evolved notions of love.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan explores various angles of highlighting the prejudices and misconceptions about homosexuality, through different characters and elements.

You want to root for their relationship, equality and love, but it’s all too erratic to sink into the characters and feel empathy. The serious subject is interlaced with subtle and clever humor, but it doesn’t quite hit the right notes to keep you engaged.

There are some quirky and witty bits in the film that certainly help drive the point home:

  • The opening scene with Kartik and Aman running to hop on a moving train – an iconic scene from the 90’s etched in our minds as a symbol of heroic love. Surely a clever way portrayal of how far we’ve come to understanding and normalizing homosexuality.
  • The analogy of a genetically modified cauliflower
the natural being unnatural to same-sex love, which is as natural as any other love.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan solely rests on the shoulders of its actors.

  • Actor Jitendra Kumar plays a shy, reserved and calm man who avoids conflict. It’s a character we may have seen him play before, but his performance is sharp as a nervous son and practical lover. You believe his fear in coming out to the world, yet his struggle to maintain peace.
  • Actress Maanvi Gagroo plays “Goggle” – a girl who has a glass eye and is desperate to get married. Gagroo is lovable and even relatable as a sarcastic and moody woman, who is just fed-up with drama everywhere around her. She’s aware of her flaw, but that never stops her from walking into any room with swag.
  • Supporting cast of Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao, Manu Rishi and Sunita Rajwar also shine in every frame, even though their characters are under-developed for the most part.

Popcorn Rating: [2 / 5]

Overall, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan definitely pushes some boundaries of traditional cinema. It treads carefully to balance the entertainment quotient as well as shed light on a sensitive subject. However, fails to trigger any real conversation.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

#Review – In Season 2, Pushpavalli is back with a vengeance and will go beyond just stalking Nikhil

Season 2 of Pushpavalli (titular role played by Sumukhi Suresh) kicks off with her engagement.

Please note before you read further – there are some spoilers ahead!

We see Pushpavalli sitting in a room, dressed in a traditional saree with montage of flashbacks that left her heartbroken. Tears roll down her face. Just when we think she has learned her lesson and moved on, she wipes off those tears and we see revenge in her eyes.

Scene from Pushpavalli

In Season 2, Pushpavalli is back with a vengeance and will go beyond just stalking Nikhil!

She is hurt, bitter and more deranged this time around.

In the first episode, while her mother and friend, Pankaj (played by co-writer Naveen Richard) run from pillar to post to ensure Pushpavalli’s engagement goes smoothly, her primary goal is to manipulate everyone around her to get Nikhil to the ceremony. Her only focus is to make her way back into Nikhil’s life.

While all this is intended to be humorous with a layer of crazy, it’s all too over-the-top. The writing may be consistent with Season 1, but the characters and hammy dialogue delivery can be very distracting. It’s incoherent and hard to follow or keep up (we suggest keeping the subtitles on).

Character development and analysis:

Pushpavalli is obviously disturbed and dangerously unhinged this season. Though she is extremely toxic, there are times when we empathize with her (kudos to Suresh for sensitively portraying such a dark character). You sense the wires in her brain getting hopelessly muffled. It’s only when she gets slapped by a cop, she snaps out of the crazy … though briefly.

Scene from Pushpavalli

Pushpavalli’s childhood friend/boss/crèche owner Pankaj is unreasonably loud and abusive, and particularly unjustified for someone who works with kids. However, his character and reactions towards Pushpavalli is how we feel watching it all unfold before us – Though he’s constantly irritated by her, he still tries to help her.

Even Vasu, the landlady whose house Pushpavalli decides to crash at illegally, seems to be too aggressive and brash. She may be a shrewd businesswoman, but the demands towards the tenants are too unrealistic. Why are the PG’s putting up with this… ?

Not much seems to have changed about Nikhil (played by Manish Anand), except there are times when you notice some grey shades to his character. He knows how to manipulate Lee (as he refers to Pushpavalli) and knows exactly what buttons to push to get her attention.

Scene from Pushpavalli

Vidyuth (played by Vidyuth Gargi), Pushpavalli’s fiancé, is a new entry to this chaos. He is sweet, gentle, naïve and lovable. You feel for him when he realizes he’s fallen for someone delusional and a psychopath.

T-Boi (played by Ashok Pathak) is a delight to watch. He innocently goes out of his way to Pushpavalli in all her irrational plans.

Some clever bits:

There are some hilarious and clever moments in the season, but they are too far and too little.

  • When Pankaj asks Pushpavalli to look up the definition of “blinders,” implying that she should stay away from trouble (Nikhil) and keep her eyes on the prize (Vidyuth).
  • When Pankaj gets jealous of Nikhil and nicknames him “ankle socks” – very relatable given that “cool guys” are often seen wear ankle socks these days.
  • Nikhil being goofy to cheer up an old friend and boosting her morale.
  • The subtle integration of Suresh’s stand-up show also streaming on Amazon Prime.
Scene from Pushpavalli

The build-up to the climax is thrilling and even educational when Nikhil and Pushpavalli prepare for the quality clearance at his “okra” factory. The drama intensifies when she discovers that Nikhil has been dating a doctor; Pushpavalli suddenly hits the next stage of insanity. She is determined to destroy everything that comes in her way, even if she hurts people who really care about her. Toward to end she is completely maniacal and wouldn’t stop till all goes up in flames (literally).

Overall, the season tests your patience with some exaggerated moments and unrealistic twists and turns. In comparison to Season 1, Season 2 is darker, but not as riveting. It picks up only after episode 3, by which time you’re only watching because you’ve committed to the characters from season 1.

‘Kalank’ may be responsible for Fox Star Studio’s exit from ‘Takht’

Filmmaker Karan Johar may have to put one of his most ambitious projects, Takht on hold.

The news of the period-drama being shelved has been doing the rounds for some time now. While some speculate that the delay is due to the global pandemic outbreak (COVID-19), other sources suggest that Fox Star Studios has been contemplating their association with Dharma Productions for a while.

The two productions houses have co-produced several successful projects over the years. However, the box-office failure of Dharma’s last few films made Fox Star re-evaluate any future collaborations.

Word on the streets is also that the disappointing reception of Kalank [2019] was responsible for such a harsh reaction from Fox Star.

First Poster of Takht

Takht, a multi-starrer, is being touted as the most expensive project produced under the banner, with an estimated budget of INR 250 crores. This makes it harder for Fox Star to support it owing to the financial setbacks of 2020 with the underwhelming commercial response of Chhapaak (starring Deepika Padukone) and Panga (Kangana Ranaut).

There’s been no official statement or confirmation from either party.

Dharma Productions has temporarily shut shop due to the nationwide lockdown and may even have to re-think and restructure other projects in the pipeline.

Karan Johar’s last directorial release was in 2016, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, starring Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai and Ranbir Kapoor.

A typical ‘David Dhawan’ rom-com that had its flaws, but deserves a watch with the family on a night-in. Starring Karishma Kapoor, Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt.

9. Dil Chahta Hai [2001]
A film that changed the status quo in Bollywood and is still considered one of the most stylish movies of Hindi cinema. A first to show how friends really talk, behave, fight and even travel. Starring Akshaye Khanna, Saif Ali Khan, Aamir Khan, Preity Zinta and Sonali Kulkari.

11. Aaja Nachle [2007]
Termed as a “comeback” of actress Madhuri Dixit, Aaja Nachle may have failed at the box office, but it’s appreciated by many theatre lovers. A boys’ bachelor party film that took us on a journey that resonated with the urban fast-paced contemporary lifestyles. Starring Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif, Kalki Koechlin.

17. Hasee Toh Phasee [2014]
A subtle and delightfully quirky romantic comedy (with a very misleading and irrelevant title) about two people falling in love during a chaotic week involving a wedding and a family reunion. It’s one of the most underrated rom-coms of recent times, starring Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra.

18. Dum Laga Ke Haisha [2015]
The simple and sincere rom-com that shows (not just talks) about defying the conventional notions of beauty or love. Although it rests on the usual stereotypes and is fairly predictable, it still makes you root for a happy ending. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar.

19. Dil Dhadakne Do [2015]
A family drama coated with cliches of rich Delhiites, but with its heart in the right place – showing the complexities of basic relationship and family dynamics. It’s fun, its glossy, its entertaining! The ensemble cast includes Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Ranvir Singh, Anushka Sharma and Farhan Akhtar amongst others.

20. Dear Zindagi [2016]
A coming-of-age drama for GenNow – a group of people who are overworked, overstressed, overachievers and perhaps over distressed. Dear Zindagi is light, breezy and relatable with some hardcore life lessons. Starring Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan.

BONUS:
21. Karan Arjun [1995]
A revenge-drama about two brothers with a loving mother, a greedy uncle and the miracle of reincarnation. Watch it for the memorable songs, iconic dialogues (if you know, you know!), and the two beloved Khans before all the stardom. What’s not to love?

Most of these films are available either on subscription based OTT channels and/or can be rented on Youtube.

Mainstream actors, Kajol and Shruti Haasan explore different style of storytelling with a short-film, ‘Devi’

Artists are no longer limited to big-screen projects only.

Several mainstream actors are experimenting not only different mediums such as with the digital / OTT (over-the-top), but also exploring different styles of story-telling, i.e. short films.

Actors Kajol and Shruti Haasan are making their debut is this space by headlining a digital short film titled Devi. The ensemble cast also includes actors Neha Dhupia, Neena Kulkarni, Mukta Barve, Sandhya Mhatre, Rama Joshi, Shivani Raghuvanshi, and Yashaswini Dayama.

First look of Devi

The first look of Devi showcased the leading characters – all women from different walks of life and strata of society.

Written and directed by Priyanka Banerjee, Devi revolves around the lives of nine oppressed women who share the same dilemmas and issues of society.

Speaking of her first short film that ha been shot in just two days, Kajol said:

It’s a poignant film, one that needs to be shared with the world, especially today. My character, Jyoti, is vastly different from me in many ways, but uncannily we share a lot too. In today’s times when gender discrimination, abuse, and violence is being spoken about vociferously, films like Devi are far more relevant and I am glad to have got the opportunity to participate.”

[L-R] Niranjan Iyengar, Ryan Ivan Stephen, Priyanka Banerjee

Produced under the banner of Electric Apples Entertainment led by screenwriter-lyricist Niranjan Iyengar and Ryan Ivan Stephen, the film will stream in collaboration with Large Short Films.

The release date is yet to be announced.

#20YearsOfKahoNaaPyaarHai – 20 years later, “Raptaa” still sounds like a romantic word

Exactly two decades ago, film Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai hit the theatres on 14 January 2000. Not only did it win a total of 92 awards, it gave us two charming debutants – Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel.

If you’re a 90’s kid, you surely had a poster (or five) of Roshan in your room and knew the exact beats of the title track. You could rock any party doing the hook step with anyone in sight. And who can forget the moves of ‘Raj’ in the oddly shady club dancing to ‘Ek Pal Ka Jeena.’

On the occasion of its twentieth anniversary, we are celebrating some of our favorite scenes from the film.

When Sonia thought Rohit was a birthday present – Ati sundar, swach, nirmal

Still from Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai

When Sonia did her makeup in the car and pasted the golden star on her cheek

Still from Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai

When Sonia crushes hard over Rohit and think “raptaa” is a romantic word

Still from Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai

When Sonia and Rohit fall in love and dance – Kaho Naa Pyaar Haiiii

Still from Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai

Ek Pal Ka Jeena… nuff said

Still from Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai

When Raj makes an omelette for Sonia – Aapke desh mein anda iss anjaam se thodte hai?

Raj’s electrifying performance of a different version of “Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai” – Can you feel it?

#TrailerTalk – The vibe of ‘Jawaani Jaaneman’ is refreshing and modern with a bit of Déjà vu

The much awaited trailer of Jawaani Jaaneman is creating a huge buzz and it pans out exactly like the lyrics of the original song from film Namak Halaal [1982].

Still from Jawaani Jaaneman

Few minutes into the trailer you may feel a bit of Déjà vu:

  • Saif Ali Khan’s character of a party animal looking for hook-ups seems an extension of his character ‘Gautam’ from Cocktail [2012]. It also has a sprinkle of ‘Jai’ from Love Aaj Kal [2009], who doesn’t believe in marriage.
  • The synopsis feels like the 1998 film Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai, where the character of ‘Kabir’ (played by Aditya Narayan) is now older Gen Z-version played by Alaya Furniturewala.

Watch the trailer here and tell us if you felt the same:

The instant vibe of the film is refreshing, modern and an entertainer starring actors Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Farida Jalal, Kubbra Sait, Kiku Sharda and debutant Alaya Furniturewala.

PS. A special shout-out to the makers for recreating the 90’s classic “Ole Ole” with its original star – a song that needed a comeback at parties in the new decade!

Directed by Nitin Kakkar, Jawaani Jaaneman releases on 31st January 2020.
