#TrailerTalk – ‘Chhapaak’ trailer has some gut-wrenching visuals to evoke numbing rush of emotions

There are films based on true events which show the audience a exaggerated version of the story, and there are stories about real people that is portrayed with utmost earnestness and empathy – Chhapaak is the latter.

Actress Deepika Padukone is seen essaying the role of ‘Malti,’ based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. The Chhapaak trailer gives a glimpse into the struggles of a 15-year-old girl whose life changed in a single moment, and her ability to build strength to fight for her rights.

Still from Chhapaak Trailer

Speaking of the trailer, it opens with a visual of a crowd protesting for justice post the Nirbhaya case, set in 2012. We’re then introduced to Malti, who drops to the floor in a busy market, crying for help.

What follows is the story of a young girl learning to cope with the disaster, facing herself in the mirror, fighting, and falling in love with life again.

Padukone’s portrayal of Malti is engaging and her character’s progressions seems genuine.

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film also stars Vikrant Massey playing the role of a social activist supporting Malti’s case.

Filmmaker Karan Johar doesn’t agree with the ethics and gender politics of ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ today

Filmmaker Karan Johar doesn’t shy away from being self-critical. He is a man who uses his experiences and emotional sensibilities in his work and has admittedly kept himself updated through his social associations with “newer and younger energies.”

Johar keeps evolving with changing times, which is probably why he sees his film and its characters in a different light after two decades.

In a recent interview, when asked about his debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the director was quick to dissect it and why it wouldn’t work today. The romantic drama was a phenomenal hit in 1998 and became a cult for its then unique subject, fancy set designs, songs, and let’s not forget Rahul aur Anjali ka jhagada!

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai [1998]

However, in hindsight, Johar now questions the film’s ethics and gender politics.

“Rahul [played by Shah Rukh Khan] doesn’t stand for very much. He’s a deeply confused character, doesn’t know what he wants and, really, didn’t do a lot much in the movie. Whatever happened to him was because there were people pushing him – his dead wife’s spirit, his eight-year-old daughter, and Anjali herself. What made him endearing was his charm, his large heart and Shah Rukh’s personal charisma.”

Still from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai [1998]

He also added, “There was no logic or backstory to the characters. You don’t know what Shah Rukh, or anyone else, does for a living in the movie. And the eight letters – one for each birthday – made no sense, either.”

As for changes he would want in the film today, Johar said he would keep Rahul’s character more real and “more EQ [emotional quotient].”

“I’d also introduce more confrontation. Rahul, today, would be able to have an open conversation with Anjali. He’ll know that she likes him and he’d address that with her. If Tina were to die, he’d come to terms with his feelings for Anjali and go back to her, not sit moping…Today, I’d keep it. Because now I understand, it’s what would make them more human. More real.”

Thought the director-producer has no plans of a reboot, he sees actors Ranveer Singh as Rahul, Alia Bhatt to play Anjali and Janhvi Kapoor as Tina.

“On my wish-list would be Ranveer Singh as Rahul. He has that mad intensity as Shah Rukh Khan. Alia Bhatt as Anjali. She has the spunk and Janhvi Kapoor as Tina because she has the poise and balance of the part,” said Johar.

#Review – ‘The Sky is Pink’ is like a warm fuzzy hug from your loved ones

The Sky is Pink is a warm fuzzy feeling you get when you hug your parents, your kids or your pets.

The film revolves around the true story of Aisha Chaudhary (Zaira Wasim) who survived a rare disorder called Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) and later developed a condition called pulmonary fibrosis. Though she struggled to cope with life-threatening disorders daily, she celebrated life before breathing her last… and that’s what The Sky is Pink about.

Source: Youtube – RSVP Movies

It celebrates life, family, parents, siblings, animals and all the messiness in between.

The Sky is Pink tells the story of Aisha, through the life of her parents Aditi Chaudhary (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) and Niren Chaudhary (Farhan Akhtar). This is a couple who’s madly in love; It’s about their journey navigating through life to make the most of all the unexpected bumps along the way.

Source: Youtube – RSVP Movies

Speaking of the screenplay, the chronology of events is established by taking the audience back and forth to critical moments in the lives of the Chaudhary’s.

To set the mood, the story is narrated by chirpy and enthusiastic Aisha … from the dead. Though a tricky treatment for the film, it does help in parts to understand the timelines and their family dynamics. The first frame instantly gives a profound sense of grief and emptiness. Aditi and Niren seem to be coping in their own ways while evidently drifting apart; Just then we’re taken back to a happier time in their lives.

Aditi discusses an unplanned pregnancy and contemplates the birth of the child with her husband. We immediately get a glimpse into their relationship when Niren fears the pregnancy due to certain health risks and past experiences by simply saying “body tumhari hai, decision bhi tumhara hai.” There’s no melodrama.

Source: Youtube – RSVP Movies

The crux of the film is about a family rigorously fighting against time to save Aisha – to gain few days of her life so they can stay a family. This is where stellar performances by Chopra Jonas and Akhtar play a huge role in creating impact, and their chemistry as a young slightly-giddy couple in love to committed parents hold the film together.

Chopra Jonas effortlessly slips into the various shades of Aditi, from being a young girl running (in slow motion) on the terrace of a Chandni Chowk bungalow to a complete contrast as a dedicated, stressed and highly perceptive mother of two teenage kids.

Akhtar returns to big screen after two years and shines in every frame. His character arc from a boyfriend to a husband, a young father struggling to protect and provide for his family and then an aged father, makes this his best performance. Towards the second half, Akhtar will remind you of your father who silently holds fort because he can’t afford to be weak in difficult times. He’s an aching father only trying to save his daughter.

Actor Rohit Saraf plays the role of Ishaan Chaudhary, Aisha’s older brother who may seem aloof and tough, but breaks down when his terminally ill sister calls fearing her inevitable death. Though Saraf’s character doesn’t develop as much, he certainly makes a mark with the limited screen-time.

Director Shonali Bose shows a world that is sensitive, real, and even flawed without making it too fluffy.

Sure, there are certain portions of the film that are underwhelming such as the overly-used nicknames of “Moose” “Panda” and “Giraffe,” or Aisha’s progression as a motivational speaker and writer, but none big enough to take away from the core of the film – that pink sky.

You will laugh, you will cry and even weep towards the end. If you have a sudden urge to hug your loved ones after watching the film, it has done its job!

PS. I strongly urge the audience to stick around till the end credits of the film. Everything you experience through the characters of Aditi, Niren, Aisha and Ishaan come alive with personal home videos of the real Chaudhary family. Your emotions come full circle before you leave the theatre.

Sonam Kapoor was the perfect choice to bring in the “Sonam” factor

The motion poster of The Zoya Factor dropped today showing actress Soman Kapoor dressed as the goddess of luck carrying cricket gear.

Judging from the poster that reads “India Ka Lucky Charm,” we can assume Kapoor’s character to be a ‘lucky charm’ for India to win cricket matches.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B1dQai2l-8P/

Kapoor’s reel name is “Zoya” in the film, however she revealed that her real name ‘Sonam’ means ‘good luck.’ Her father, Anil Kapoor named her so because he believed she brought him luck in life and career. This certainly corresponds to her character and the film’s synopsis, which gave the makers confidence that Kapoor was perfect for this role.

Directed by Abhishek Sharma, The Zoya Factor is based on the 2008 novel by author Anuja Chauhan, that follows the story of a girl who proves to be a lucky charm for the Indian cricket team during the 2011 World Cup.

The film also stars actor Dulquer Salmaan. It is slated for release on September 20, 2019.
