‘A Thursday’ is a high voltage yet socially relevant drama which pleasantly surprises you

It was way back in 2008 when a film titled A Wednesday came out of nowhere and became the talk of the town with its unique concept. The film was a sleeper hit primarily due to the message which it was trying to convey. On similar lines (and I say that because the producer Ronnie Screwvala is involved in both projects), another film releases today titled A Thursday. This is the start of another very heavy weekend with so many new releases. That said, I finished watching the film last night. Is A Thursday as impressive as A Wednesday? Let’s find out.

STORY & SCREENPLAY

A Thursday follows the story of a school teacher who holds 16 children hostage at a pre-school. What is her demand and her story? The story here is quite interesting with a socially relevant message at the end. The journey is interesting too but not without its share of flaws. Before getting to the screenplay I would like to mention that I hadn’t watched its trailer(I usually don’t), and I was pleasantly surprised by it. The story wastes almost no time in getting straight to the point. While parts of it might seem far fetched or slightly wobbly in its writing, the drama is gripping and there is urgency maintained throughout. While you are least expecting it, s**t gets real almost 50 mins into the film with an event that commands your attention. As the screenplay progressed, I could draw a few parallels to the 2008 sleeper hit A Wednesday. The beats of the screenplay were quite similar. The issue that I had with this film though was its length. A tighter edit would have ensured that the drama would have been at least 20 minutes shorter. But the drama is designed such that it doesn’t allow your attention to waver and instead it holds your attention for most parts. You would often question as to where the drama is headed. But the good news is that it all comes together well at the end. The mystery element and the final reveal are good in what turned out to be a high voltage drama. And the final message is a good one and very relevant as well. Overall, a pretty good screenplay.

DIALOGUES, MUSIC & DIRECTION

The dialogues are decent although nothing much to shout about. The BGM is fair and it does its bit to keep you on your toes. The editing seemed a little choppy in places but after a point it didn’t quite bother me. Director Behzad Khambata has done a good job with this subject. He manages to hold your attention without providing any dull moment which means some brownie points for the director.

PERFORMANCES

The performances are very good here. Neha Dhupia as Cathy yet again shines in the role of a pregnant cop(she actually was pregnant with her second child at the time of shooting this film). Karanvir Sharma as Rohit has his moments to impress. Maya Sarao as the news anchor is pretty good. Kalyanee Mulay as Savitri is just effortless in her performance and such a pleasure to watch her onscreen. Dimple Kapadia as the PM delivers a very dignified performance. Boloram Das as the driver is absolutely first rate. Atul Kulkarni as Javed has a magnetic screen presence and he is absolutely fabulous to watch. But the show belongs to Yami Gautam in perhaps the best performance of her career. She is brilliant in each scene and her character keeps you guessing throughout. This was truly a memorable outing for Yami.

CONCLUSION

A Thursday is a high voltage yet socially relevant drama which pleasantly surprises you. Available on Hotstar.

Ironically, there is no real depth to ‘Gehraiyaan’. It is all a shallow mess.

I enjoy watching films that absorbs me and pulls my attention to the story consummately. I like to experience the story subjectively and like to connect with it.

Sometimes I feel its essence positively, and sometimes its journey doesn’t resonate with me for various reasons. Whatever it may be, I have to feel something to be able to write about it.

Unfortunately, I felt nothing for Gehraiyaan.

< Spoilers Ahead >

I was trying hard to connect with the story, the characters, the emotions which were supposedly complex, and elements that perhaps a mature eye and sensibilities of life … but I felt nothing. And that’s something I rarely experience for a film of such a genre. In fact, I typically feel too much.

While watching the film I realized how misleading the trailer was, along with all the promotions, marketing and interviews. For starters, Gehraiyaan has nothing (or little) to do with infidelity. It’s deeper (gehra) than that.

It touches upon topics of the unhealthy patterns inherited by generations in a family, childhood trauma, relationships, trust, and a few other things.

However, it’s presented all too shallowly. No one subject feels critical enough to justify the actions of the characters, especially in the first half which is a stretch.

What tempted Alisha (Deepika Padukone) to suddenly cheat on her boyfriend of six years, that too with her cousin’s fiancé. It was obvious that Karan (Dhairya Karwa) and her didn’t have a perfect relationship and both were inching towards a break up. So what led her to act so irrationally?

Also, why was it okay for Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi) to flirt with Alisha, his fiancé’s cousin, from the minute he met her. And why didn’t Alisha resist, or better yet confront him and expose him to Tia (Ananya Panday)?

Having said that, what I appreciated was maker’s efforts in showing us the character’s progression and multi-faceted traits, rather than explicitly telling us. After all, no individual is black or white – we’re all flawed.

Of all the characters I could empathize with only Tia and Alisha’s father (Naseeruddin Shah).

I have to point out that Panday’s restrained acting deserves praise for playing such a mature character with such ease. Tia is someone who loves the people closest to her and is willing to bend over backwards for them, all while being a responsible adult. She carries some dark secrets but its her caring attitude that makes her endearing.

Alisha’s father has my heart. HIS character moved me the most because he is like any father, protecting his child from all evil or pain.

Speaking of Karan Arora (Dhairya Karwa), unfortunately isn’t given much to play with. But the actor manages to make his presence felt in the limited screen time and the basic character arc.

Padukone and Chaturvedi give a top notch performance, sinking their teeth in the characters. However, once again, given the subject(s) and exhaustive storytelling, I simply couldn’t relate to them or their actions.

Special shout out to actor Rajat Kapoor as Jitesh, for playing such a wily character with class and mastery.

Coming back to the film – I wish writers Shakun Batra, Ayesha Devitre, Sumit Roy and Yash Sahai focused on at least one of the many subjects intensively instead of outlining multiple issues in one.

The second half gains momentum as the missing pieces of the puzzle gradually come together, by which time I had lost patience owing to a crawling first half. I almost felt anxious and frustrated by Alisha’s choices… and stuck like her character.

Maybe that was the intention. Maybe not?

Final Verdict:

Ironically, there is no real depth to Gehraiyaan. It is a shallow mess of a variety of issues pitched for the viewer to unravel. While that may be a great experiment for new-age cinema and its audience, the storytelling failed to leave a pleasant impact as a film.

Popcorn Rating –   [2/5]

‘The Batman’ releases in cinemas on 4th March 2022

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies—Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright)—amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

The Batman will be released nationwide on 4th March 2022 by Warner Bros. Pictures

‘The Tinder Swindler’ is a highly engaging documentary, but it also raises questions about love in the time of Tinder

How to review a documentary?

Do you critique it basis its production value, technicalities, the subject or the story it’s uncovering?

The Tinder Swindler, for me, strikes a chord on all accounts.

The 1 hour 54 minutes documentary chronicles the events in the lives of women who were duped of millions by a man on Tinder.

Now, that’s a synopsis summary that grabbed my attention to immediately hit the play button, not only because I enjoy true-crime mysteries but also because I’ve always been skeptical of Tinder as a dating platform, and this story certainly reinforced my cynicism.

The Tinder Swindler is the story of Simon Leviev (the swindler) narrated first-hand by the victims of his crime, Cecilie Fjellhoy, Pernilla Sjoholm and then some.

It starts off on a light romantic note with Fjellhoy recounting the time she met Leviev and was smitten by his charm, hospitality, and his luxurious standard of living.

While it’s easy to judge Fjellhoy for being inanely naïve and irresponsible, and possibly a “gold digger”, it’s how she describes her idea of fairytales that got my attention.

She referred to Disney movies, specifically Beauty & the Beast where Belle is “saved” by the beast who in turn finds comfort in her. This made me think about how pop culture has inadvertently indoctrinated generations of women to believe a “Prince Charming” would be their key to love and happiness. And women, somehow, need to “fix” or “save” the man in order to have a healthy relationship.

It’s probably this mindset that needles people like Leviev to con unsuspecting women searching for true love, and Tinder is his weapon.

But then Sjoholm’s story is a little different. She wasn’t in love with Leviev. She became his friend who tagged along with his then girlfriend on lavish holidays together. So, what influenced her to be swindled?

I guess this is where gender dynamics and trust come to play, and Leviev’s research, meticulous planning and judgement of his targets led to his success.

He carefully played his cards with each victim learning about their lifestyles, values, beliefs, personality traits and schemed a con basis his relationship with them.

Simon Leviev didn’t just dupe them; he played an emotionally scarring con exhibiting characteristics of a true con artist – psychopathy, narcissism and machiavellianism.

The Tinder Swindler uncovers a lot about the criminal, his victims whose lives turned upside down for being too trusting, the power of investigative journalism that led to his arrest and even karma [revenge is a dish best served cold – on eBay].

There’s no doubt that the documentary is highly engaging, but it also raises questions about love in the time of Tinder. How safe are we in the world of digital apps? When and where do we draw the line? How far will you go for a lover or a friend?

I guess the important take away from The Tinder Swindler is, as Sjoholm said, “one little swipe can change your life forever”.

“Dear Homi” – A letter from a student, a mentee and a dear friend Vikram Sarabhai

Dear Homi,

I know these letters that I write to you now would never reach you, but would that keep me from writing them to you? Definitely not!

Do you remember the first time we interacted? Looking back, I am not even able to fathom how we traveled that journey of sharing a student-teacher relationship to being friends.

I was always in your awe. I know there were times when I couldn’t see what you saw, but even after all those banters, I somewhere in the depths of my heart knew that you would not lose sight of right and wrong over your ambitions. I am sorry for not believing in you at times, but you know, I always came around, for you were the only one who I actually trusted.

My friend, you, and me, what we shared was beyond what anyone could ever portray. I wish we could undo what happened to you, and work on yet another dream project, but I guess that’s what fighting for the country means, you have to lose to be able to win.

The belief, that my dearest friend, from some corner of the country is always wishing me success, would keep me going. I don’t know, what now will. But I guess it would be the courage, zeal, and passion that I got from you, that will.

I hope I keep making you proud, my teacher, my mentor, my guide, and my dearest dearest friend.

Yours,
Sarabhai
