‘The Tinder Swindler’ is a highly engaging documentary, but it also raises questions about love in the time of Tinder

How to review a documentary?

Do you critique it basis its production value, technicalities, the subject or the story it’s uncovering?

The Tinder Swindler, for me, strikes a chord on all accounts.

The 1 hour 54 minutes documentary chronicles the events in the lives of women who were duped of millions by a man on Tinder.

Now, that’s a synopsis summary that grabbed my attention to immediately hit the play button, not only because I enjoy true-crime mysteries but also because I’ve always been skeptical of Tinder as a dating platform, and this story certainly reinforced my cynicism.

The Tinder Swindler is the story of Simon Leviev (the swindler) narrated first-hand by the victims of his crime, Cecilie Fjellhoy, Pernilla Sjoholm and then some.

It starts off on a light romantic note with Fjellhoy recounting the time she met Leviev and was smitten by his charm, hospitality, and his luxurious standard of living.

While it’s easy to judge Fjellhoy for being inanely naïve and irresponsible, and possibly a “gold digger”, it’s how she describes her idea of fairytales that got my attention.

She referred to Disney movies, specifically Beauty & the Beast where Belle is “saved” by the beast who in turn finds comfort in her. This made me think about how pop culture has inadvertently indoctrinated generations of women to believe a “Prince Charming” would be their key to love and happiness. And women, somehow, need to “fix” or “save” the man in order to have a healthy relationship.

It’s probably this mindset that needles people like Leviev to con unsuspecting women searching for true love, and Tinder is his weapon.

But then Sjoholm’s story is a little different. She wasn’t in love with Leviev. She became his friend who tagged along with his then girlfriend on lavish holidays together. So, what influenced her to be swindled?

I guess this is where gender dynamics and trust come to play, and Leviev’s research, meticulous planning and judgement of his targets led to his success.

He carefully played his cards with each victim learning about their lifestyles, values, beliefs, personality traits and schemed a con basis his relationship with them.

Simon Leviev didn’t just dupe them; he played an emotionally scarring con exhibiting characteristics of a true con artist – psychopathy, narcissism and machiavellianism.

The Tinder Swindler uncovers a lot about the criminal, his victims whose lives turned upside down for being too trusting, the power of investigative journalism that led to his arrest and even karma [revenge is a dish best served cold – on eBay].

There’s no doubt that the documentary is highly engaging, but it also raises questions about love in the time of Tinder. How safe are we in the world of digital apps? When and where do we draw the line? How far will you go for a lover or a friend?

I guess the important take away from The Tinder Swindler is, as Sjoholm said, “one little swipe can change your life forever”.

“Dear Homi” – A letter from a student, a mentee and a dear friend Vikram Sarabhai

Dear Homi,

I know these letters that I write to you now would never reach you, but would that keep me from writing them to you? Definitely not!

Do you remember the first time we interacted? Looking back, I am not even able to fathom how we traveled that journey of sharing a student-teacher relationship to being friends.

I was always in your awe. I know there were times when I couldn’t see what you saw, but even after all those banters, I somewhere in the depths of my heart knew that you would not lose sight of right and wrong over your ambitions. I am sorry for not believing in you at times, but you know, I always came around, for you were the only one who I actually trusted.

My friend, you, and me, what we shared was beyond what anyone could ever portray. I wish we could undo what happened to you, and work on yet another dream project, but I guess that’s what fighting for the country means, you have to lose to be able to win.

The belief, that my dearest friend, from some corner of the country is always wishing me success, would keep me going. I don’t know, what now will. But I guess it would be the courage, zeal, and passion that I got from you, that will.

I hope I keep making you proud, my teacher, my mentor, my guide, and my dearest dearest friend.

Yours,
Sarabhai

A Very Vulnerable Kapil Sharma Takes Us On A Journey In ‘I’m Not Done Yet’

When Kapil Sharma first announced his stand-up special on Netflix, I expected him to present an extension of his television persona and jokes. The impression I got from the teaser was him utilizing the Netflix stage to share stories and jokes he can’t on traditional television with The Kapil Sharma Show.

I was proven both right and wrong – he did the latter and let go of the former.

Described as the “Kind of Comedy” in India, Sharma came to the limelight around 2007 after winning The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, following which he slowly became a household name.

However, the world only saw his rise to fame and success and the incidents that led to his (so-called) downfall; nobody cared for or experienced his journey.

Image from I'm Not Done Yet

I recently came across a quote by Swami Sivananda that I was reminded of after watch this Netflix special.

“The harder the struggle, the more glorious the triumph. Self-realization demands very great struggle”… and that’s the essence of I’m Not Done Yet.

It isn’t a typical comedy stand-up special that will make you laugh till your cheeks hurt or sides split, but it will certainly make you empathize and smile with him.

Sharma gets candid about his alcohol addiction, fall out with the press, the media and the world in general, his battle with depression and conversations with his therapists.

The 54-minute monologue is a sincere attempt to talk to a room full of people and the viewers through the streaming platform who may have judged him or have stereotyped him as a low-brow comedian.

Sharma tries to include few punches and subtle jokes throughout his stand-up but is visibly uncomfortable and overwhelmed absorbing the fact that a ginormous network like Netflix has given him some space to speak. It may seem insignificant to some, but it’s a huge deal for an artist who was written off by the whole world not too long ago.

A very vulnerable Sharma takes us on a journey of his life sharing anecdotes from his past, moments with his late father, meeting his now wife, climbing the ladder slowly and steady. And while this could be labelled as a “rags to riches” story, it’s so much deeper than that.

It’s the story of anyone who’s worked hard for their dreams. It’s the journey of anyone who has strived to learn and grow, fought against failure multiple times, and survived to enjoy the sweet taste of success and contentment.

Image from I'm Not Done Yet

Remember how we applauded Hannah Gadsby for her boldly unapologetic Netflix special Nanette [2018], where the Australian comic attempted to redefine the standards of comedy through personal revelations and turmoil, I’m Not Done Yet deserves the same praise.

Sharma may be a celebrity today, but success isn’t achieved overnight. While everyone is always interested in “success stories”, nobody knows the amount of hard work, struggle, sleepless nights, planning, failing and restarting it takes to climb that mountain.

Verdict:

Kapil Sharma’s I’m Not Done Yet is an honest expression of a man sharing his deepest, darkest insecurities and faith to overcome it all… because he’s not done yet.

It is steaming on Netflix.
