Bollywood lyricists feature in a music video demanding credits on streaming platforms

An artist feels appreciated when his/her work gets recognized. When their art has the ability to touch people, that’s a huge validation of their talent.

And they deserve credit for it. After all, everyone puts in their heart and soul into our work for some credit and recognition, don’t we?

Popular Bollywood lyricists Varun Grover, Kausar Munir and Swanand Kirkire penned down and featured in a quirky and lighthearted song titled “Credit De Do Yaar” dedicated to songwriters in the business.

In a short music video, fifteen lyricists came together to voice their concern about lack of recognition awarded to them on streaming platforms.

Towards the end of the video, National Awardee Grover shares a message for the audience to join in and support the demands of the lyricists.

“This was a small effort by 15 lyricists for a big issue. We aren’t under any false impression that you would remember our faces, but please make sure you remember our names because the fight after all is about the names. Often the name of the lyrics-writers goes missing from music streaming platforms, apps or even the official Youtube channels of music companies. And we just want them to credit us properly wherever they play our songs.”

Varun Grover

National Award Winner, Lyricist Swanand Kirkire who is best known for penning songs such as “Behti Hawaa Sa Tha Woh” from 3 Idiots [2009] and “Maanjha” from Kai Po Che [2013], shared a series of tweets with screenshots of various music streaming apps. He highlighted the design and practice of not crediting the songwriters.

“There’s no tradition of crediting the lyricists on this music app. Only the thumbnail, which the producer has provided has a mention, but once you click, only the composer and singers are credited. They have also embedded the lyrics, but not the name of the lyricist.”

Swanand Kirkire

The writer-composer raised the question to streaming apps including Apple Music, Jio Saavn and Gaana, where three albums – Teesri Kasam by lyricist Shailendra, Javed Akhtar’s Lagaan and Omkara by Gulzar were also uncredited.

“If their names aren’t included, then who are we?” he added.

The video also features songwriters Sameer Anjaan, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Neelesh Misra, Manoj Muntashir, Mayur Puri, Kumaar, Shellee, Anvita Dutt, Raj Shekhar, Abhiruchi Chand, Hussain Haidry, Puneet Sharma.

Objectively speaking, ‘Dil Bechara’ is extremely flawed

Dil Bechara made its world premiere on Disney+ Hotstar on 24 July, 2020.

Starring late Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi in the lead, it is impossible to separate reel from the real world while watching the film.

Objectively speaking, Dil Bechara is extremely flawed. However, it deserves nothing but love. Therefore, I’ll focus only on what I liked about the film… because we could all use some positivity to break the noise around us.

Performances:

Rajput gives a charming performance as Manny, a young man who is in remission and lives each day fearlessly. He sings, he dances, he flirts and doesn’t let a bionic leg stop him.

Sanghi too gives an honest and sincere performance as Kizie. She has a strong screen presence and shines in every frame.

Scene from Dil Bechara

Actress Swastika Mukherjee does justice to her role as Kizie’s overprotective mother who cares for her deeply and is willing to support the decisions of her ailing daughter.

Music:

The songs of composer A. R. Rahman flow with the narrative seamlessly.

If you didn’t like them initially, give it some time, they will definitely grow on you. The music is the soul of the film and plays a huge role in driving the screenplay with more depth.

Connection:

Dil Bechara is a treasured film and a symbol of love for an artist, as actor and a loving soul gone too soon. It has the power to bring the whole world together on a single day and celebrate a life.

Sushant, hope you’re watching us watch you in our homes. You connected to so many people and your film became the reason to connect us all. Hope you’re at peace and smiling. Hope you are seri!

6 simple yet disruptive miniseries that deserve more credit and maybe even a reboot

Miniseries on the web are the most popular and consumable content these days, thanks the digital revolution. There’s a huge array of online streaming platforms with a wide range of content in various genres.

However, before the explosion of OTT content, there were some unconventional and clutter-breaking miniseries that deserve more credit… and possibly even a reboot!

In case you are looking for a change from the high-intensity dramatic series, here are 6 simple yet disruptive miniseries that released before the OTT boom in India:

Mahi Way [2010]

A romedy about a free-spirited young girl Mahi Talwar, who enjoys the simple joys of life despite being constantly criticized for her physical appearance. Starring Pushtiie Shakti in the lead, the series is about an aspiring journalist who is independent, witty, charming and has a crush on the hottest guy. She may have some insecurities but refuses to conform to the social pressures of fitting in a (metaphorical) box. She lives life her way – Mahi’s Way!

Before the reality show about matchmaking, there was Rishta.com on Sony Entertainment Television. A series about four friends who run an online dating/matrimonial platform that helps match potential soulmates. Starring Shruti Seth and Kavi Shastri as Isha Mirchandani and Rohan Mehra, respectively, Rishta.com follows the story of two business partners who are poles-apart but still work perfectly well together.

Rishta.com is a stylish show that released around the time when startup culture and the idea of online dating was slowly creating buzz… which is probably why it resonated with the viewers.

One more series backed by YRF Television, Rishta.com was directed by Rishab Seth. All episodes are available on Youtube.

A drama-dy (drama-comedy… if that’s a genre) about a curious seven-year-old boy who loves to ask questions and his father who is determined to provide answers. While some questions may be considered taboo in society, Sex Chat With Pappu & Papa aims at opening a dialogue and having uncomfortable conversations.

Don’t let the title throw you off – Sex Chat With Pappu & Papa is an edutainment series about matters related to sex & sexuality. The magic lies in the writing where each topic is explained logically and sensitively.

#TrailerTalk – ‘A Suitable Boy’ – The visual treatment of post-independent India seems authentic, the accent doesn’t

The trailer of the highly awaited BBC One series A Suitable Boy dropped recently and it may not meet your expectations.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Mira Nair, A Suitable Boy is based on the 1993 novel by author Vikram Seth, which revolves around a mother’s efforts to find a suitable match for her daughter.

What’s good:

The warm tones and traditional palette shot by the still river beautifully captures the essence of post-independent India. The visual treatment of the series works flawlessly.

Scene from A Suitable Boy

The film follows the stories of four families and touches upon various themes that may be considered taboo. Once such story is of Maan Kapoor (Ishaan Khatter) and Saeeda Bai (Tabu) that is forbidden due to their age gap. Khatter shines in every frame and Tabu is majestic even in the little screen-time she has in the trailer.

What’s not:

The Indian characters speaking English is not an issue at all, but the over-emphasis on the Indian accent and diction seems inauthentic.

Also, the background music lacks originality and doesn’t fit with the theme of the film. Indian Summer by Jai Wolf is more contemporary and associated with an upbeat vlog, using it for A Suitable Boy seems to be misfit.

Lastly, a story of forbidden love due to religion and caste is a jaded subject, at least for the Indian audience.

You can watch the trailer here:

The series also stars Tanya Maniktala, Ram Kapoor, Namit Das, Rasika Dugal, Vijay Varma, Gagan Dev Riar, Danesh Razvi, and Mikhail Sen amongst others.

A Suitable Boy will premiere on BBC One and iPlayer on 26 July, 2020.

Rating Prediction [4/5]

#TalkTime – ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ – Where are Bunny, Naina, Aditi & Avi now?

Everyone’s favorite light-hearted film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani celebrate seven years of release in 2020.

And if you follow Popcorn Pixel on Instagram and Facebook you would have seen the segment discussing of ‘where are they now?,’ where we like to talk to get creative with how the main characters’ lives shaped after the “the end.”

In this case – Bunny, Naina, Aditi and Avi!

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a feel-good film, so there’s no need to over-analyze it. But here’s my theory –

Scene from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Aditi Mehra (played by Kalki Koechlin) is still happily married to Taran. She is actively pursuing art and hosting high profile exhibitions around the world. They kinda remind me of Lilly Aldrin and Marshal Erikson from How I Met your Mother. No?

Oh, and I think they have 2 daughters.

Scene from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Avinash Arora aka ‘Avi’ (played by Aditya Roy Kapur) is cleaning up his act. After his bar business failed, he took a full-time corporate job to pay his debt and now attends a weekly AA meeting. He’s 4 years sober now.

Then comes Bunny and Naina (played by Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, respectively).

Scene from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Bunny (real name Kabir Thapar) and Naina got engaged in the last scene of the film. They tried the long distance for some time, but they both hated it because they realized what they had was not LOVE, it was merely a fling. I mean the two times they met was once on vacation and the second at their friend’s wedding. Both times were in a very temporary setting when you’re in a different mindset altogether anyway… you know…

Anyway, after months of fighting Naina visits Bunny on an adventurous holiday and realizes she hates being a doctor… something she kinda knew all along. She quit her practice and moved in with Bunny. They are digital nomads now in Spain right now.

What’s your theory – what do you think they’re up to now? Tell me in the comment!

Actors resume work with ad endorsements

Production of all new content has been shut for over three months due to the pandemic lockdown. While there are new directives being drawn to safely conduct on-ground production with all safety measures, some actors have resumed work by shooting for ads.

Recently actress Vidya Balan shot for a haircare brand at Mehboob Studios, along with a small team protected with PPEs gears.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CCYhls5nFvL/

Filmmaker Pritish Nandy supports the idea of testing the waters with such projects. He said “endorsement shoots are very short. Ultimately, it’s for a duration of a half or one minute. What we need to do is test out shooting on a continuing basis, which requires another kind of discipline, and entirely different set of protocols.”

Since commercial shoots are less demanding than big ticket projects, actors are weighing the risks of adjusting to the new norm and committing to their brand endorsements.

Nandy further added, “Ads make a lot more money than movies do. Proportionately it’s higher, as you work less, you make more money, except that work won’t be remembered.”

Film Trade Analyst, Atul Mohan considers this move as a “confidence building measure” where renowned celebrities shooting for ads can inspire their colleagues in the industry to step out and resume work as well.

“The actors will share their experience, and tips with their co-stars and that’ll make others comfortable. Right now, a positive mindset is needed. You’ve to live and survive with Coronavirus, till a vaccine is made. This will set an example for the rest of the film fraternity,” Mohan said.

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana reportedly shot for an endorsement in Chandigarh and Akshay Kumar released an awareness campaign for Covid-19.

Badhaai Ho [2018] director Amit Sharma too shot a commercial in Goa recently with a small team of up to 10 people.

Actor Arjun Kapoor too shared a behind-the-scene glimpse of an ad he shot recently.

“There’s nothing called a ‘struggling actor.’ There’s struggle in every business outside. Every job is full of struggle, this city is a struggle. So just because you’re an actor, do not go out there and shake your hand and say that ‘I am a struggling actor.’ We’re al fighting our own battles everyday, but you’ve chosen this for yourself… Respect this job.”
